It started with a coffee...
Through pure chance and firing off a random email I had coffee with the amazing Kathleen Wright who was setting up a cool new social enterprise, Sub Urban Co-Working.
I was in after the first sip of coffee, it sounded great and I wanted to be part of it. Problem one - it was a co-working space for businesses and I didn’t have one.
With a background in startup and small business operations and development I was very interested in providing business support for small businesses needing strategy and direction. A bit of market research clearly showed the were many businesses that were completely under resourced and unsupported. If you are not a sexy tech company, have global growth potential or are a powerhouse of young up and comings where do you go for business advice and support? What if you are a mum working from home, or an older person making a life change to build a business to provide a flexible lifestyle - where do you go?
Grow My Business was born and I moved into Sub Urban Co-working.
It was the perfect match, SubUrban provided me with the professional place to meet with people and the work space to focus on growing my own business away from the chaotic, noisy everyday chores that surround me in my home. Leaving the distractions behind was just the icing on the cake, what was really great was the energy and motivation I got from the people I worked with. It made realise what I really missed working from home - the buzz, the interaction, the lame jokes (ok they were mine), people to celebrate wins and bemoan loses with; I had missed working with people.
18 months later my business has evolved and grown. I provide flexible business mentoring, I design affordable flexible websites for new businesses and I have co-created a business development programme for a women’s networking group, Chrysalis for Women and co-authored a book with Kim Chamberlain.
The business development programme grew from seeing that most small businesses have pretty much the same problems - they are overwhelmed by everything they need to know and do to grow their business. They often know what they need to do but want/need to know HOW to do it, we decided to take them on a journey that would give them a growth pathway and enable us to reach and impact more small businesses.
The Business Journey helps women with small businesses to become focused, take action and implement achievable steps towards business and personal goals, by taking them through a practical and fun business journey with other like-minded women. It’s a 12 module programme that steps through growing and building your business and isn’t solely about getting more business and making more money; it’s also making sure you create a fulfilling life at the same time.
We wrote the Your Business Journey Workbook to use alongside the programme or on its own to map your pathway to business and personal growth. It’s a practical journal that provides inspiration as well as information, along with spaces for you to record, evaluate, analyse and plan.
So from a cup of coffee, to an idea that evolved and grew, from making a difference in a few businesses to impacting many, it all starting here at Sub Urban. What would my journey have looked like had I not gone for that cup of coffee? Quite a bit different I believe and not nearly as much fun!
