At Sub Urban we are blessed with being connected with some pretty cool people that are really generous with their time and wisdom.
They also have some pretty funny stories about what it was like to do business in NZ 30 or more years ago.
At Sub Urban we often talk about how in the suburbs in New Zealand we often separate business from community - like business in a community context was a bit “dirty” - we bemoan how far we have to go before co-working and small business collaboration is accepted as “what we do around here” - like networking - which everyone gets the value of, right?
When I said this to my friend he had a good laugh and said that the concept of "networking" being accepted was relatively recent. He remembered when handing out business cards at Chamber of Commerce gatherings was considered to be uncouth and everyone was issued with standard name badges!
Well that was heartening - change takes time - but it does happen - and one day we will look back and laugh at the thought that there were no places for communities to come together to work, collaborate and learn locally.
