PRESS RELEASE New community art gallery opens in Johnsonville
Late-night and weekend visitors to the Johnsonville Shopping Centre can now complement their shopping experience with beautiful works of art: the new community art gallery ‘Sub Urban Art Space’ is open and welcomes visitors to their inaugural photographic exhibition.
Sub Urban Art Space
‘Sub Urban Art Space’ shares a work space with its parent group ‘Sub Urban Co-Working’ (see http://www.suburban.org.nz). During the weekends and weekday evenings it functions as a gallery, hosting exhibitions by local artists.
“Art Space offers exciting new opportunities for our creative community”, says volunteer curator Sophie Giddens.
“We’re nurturing a network of local artists who are interested in collaborating and supporting each other, who perhaps haven’t had the opportunity to show their work before, or need some help to start.
“It is exciting to be able to offer local artists the chance to exhibit their art works for sale and we would love to hear from artists who are interested in showing their works - please get in touch!"
‘Sub Urban Art Space’ is located in the Johnsonville Shopping Centre next to the food court. Artists hire the venue and are supported by the Art Space team to create and market exhibitions, as well as manage opening events.
The inaugural exhibition A Look at the Future: Photographs by Renata Grangeiro, will be held on the weekend of 19 and 20 March. Co-ordinated by volunteer curator Sophie Giddens, the exhibition features works by Renata Grangeiro, a Brazilian photographer who now lives in Johnsonville.
“Grangeiro’s stunning photographs of children from around the world capture the ‘twinkle of hope’ that is inspiring for the future,” says Ms Giddens.
The exhibition is open to the public from 6:30pm on Friday 18 March and runs over the weekend Saturday 19 March, 9am – 5:30pm, Sunday 20 March, 10am - 4:30pm. All works are for sale.
