A lot of people that pop into our shop here at the Johnsonville Shopping Centre and comment on the artwork. It occurred to me that we have never blogged about the design philosophy behind it or even how we did it.
When Sub Urban was in it's very early concept stage we were lucky enough to have Jess O'Brien and Craig Christensen from Graphic Solutions volunteer their time to create a design concept around our social mission - to activate suburbs to become enterprising, collaborative and innovative.
We talked about how we knew there were amazing people hidden away in their homes doing cool stuff - and wouldn’t it be incredible to provide a place for these people to work, connect and learn together. We talked about asset based community development - looking for the good stuff and building on and enhancing that.
Craig and Jess came up with the concept around looking at the suburbs in a fresh and new way - essentially re-envisaging them. Hence the “dipping” of the paintings and the contrasting of opposites text -. looking at something old and familiar in a fresh and new way. This is also represented in our logo.
Now here comes the best bit - not content to “just” to do the design bit Craig then ran a workshop that enabled our founding co-workers to create the artworks themselves.
“it’s easy”, says Craig. Hmmm design types always seem to underplay their skills in the ability to create beautiful stuff!
Anyway with unending patience he helped us blunder through sticking on transfers , painting on top of them and carefully peeling them off. It took fine motor skills that lots of us hadn’t used in a very long time!
So a very big thank you again to Craig and Jess - our space would never have been as beaitifull and deeply thought out without your invaluable input.
