Brett runs an ecommerce business which retails physical products in the USA and in countries all over Europe. Running this business is mostly done online and he has suppliers and service providers from all around the world.

From home to a leased office

Brett was been working part-time in a small office by himself. This was in addition to his busy day-job which was in an office in the CBD.

At first Brett had tried doing his business from home but found that the distractions were too great, so he found a small office close to home and started working out of there. While that was good from a “no-distractions” point of view, it was quite a significant expense for a part-timer. Plus he found that he quickly started to miss having other people around.

…and then to co-working

One day when walking through Johnsonville he came across SubUrban Co-Working and thought he’d give it a try. He found that co-working offered a working space outside of home, but at a much reduced cost compared to leasing his own office. On top of that it also had a social aspect so he wasn’t going crazy inside the 4 walls by himself.

Having people around makes a big difference

Brett says “Bouncing ideas off of other people, or just having someone to talk through issues with, has been interesting. Being around people who are striving to build their own businesses also gives me motivation to keep working hard on my own business. I also didn’t realise just how important it was to just be in the presence of other people until I tried working alone in an office. I didn’t think I was an overly social type  :)”

Brett now co-works full time at SubUrban focusing on his e-commerce business.
